Top Countries puts – published country ratings on one equal-area map and one globe, each with its publisher, year, method and licence named. Made for high school. No account, no tracking.

It is the third of three sites sharing one design and one population dataset: the Explorer shows today's figures, the Playback plays them from 1950 to 2100, and this site shows where each country stands on everything else.

How to read a rating

• An index is a recipe. A composite index folds several measurements into one number with weights somebody chose. Change the recipe and the order changes.
• The label says what kind of evidence it is. Measured: counted or estimated by a statistical office. Composite index: a recipe. Survey: what people say. Curiosity: made for interest or fun — anything countable can rank countries.
• Per person, or in total? A total favours big countries; divide by population and small rich ones leap to the top. Both are true. The unit says which; the population in every row lets you divide yourself.
• Read the score before the rank. Equal values share a rank and the next is skipped, as in sport. "Highest first" or "lowest first" is stated: first in homicide means the fewest.
• Edition is not year. The edition is when it was published; a year beside a value is what it describes, and it can differ by country.
• Missing is not last. An absent country was not measured, or fell below the publisher's cut-off. Each rating lists them.

The map and the globe

The map is Equal Earth, which keeps every country at its true area — Mercator makes Greenland look larger than Africa, which is fourteen times bigger. The globe shows where a colour sits on the sphere; the map shows how much of the world it covers. Both draw the same outlines and can be swapped for any other model without touching the data.

Colour is position in the ranking — the top tenth brightest, then to a quarter, a half, three quarters, nine tenths, and the bottom tenth — and the legend prints each band's values. No figure is a neutral grey, never a low score. The outlines cover 173 of the 237 countries and areas; the other 64 are sub-pixel and are listed, never merged or drawn as zero.

The facts in every row

Population at this moment, interpolated between the UN's July-1 estimates, its change over the next year, births and deaths — and, behind a today tag, three fixed readings: male and female population, GDP and capital. All of it comes unchanged from the playback site's dataset at a pinned commit.

Как читать рейтинг

• Индекс — это рецепт. Составной индекс складывает несколько измерений в одно число с весами, которые кто-то выбрал. Поменяйте рецепт — поменяется порядок.
• Метка говорит, какого рода данные. Измерено: посчитано или оценено статистическим ведомством. Составной индекс: рецепт. Опрос: что говорят люди. Курьёз: сделано из интереса или ради шутки — ранжировать страны можно по чему угодно, что можно посчитать.
• На человека или всего? Сумма выгодна большим странам; разделите на население — и маленькие богатые взлетают наверх. Верно и то и другое. Единица говорит, что перед вами; население в каждой строке позволяет разделить самому.
• Сначала балл, потом место. Одинаковые значения делят место, следующее пропускается — как в спорте. «Сначала наибольшие» или «сначала наименьшие» указано: первое место по убийствам — у кого их меньше всех.
• Выпуск — не год. Выпуск — когда опубликовано; год рядом со значением — что оно описывает, и он может отличаться по странам.
• Отсутствие — не последнее место. Страны нет, потому что её не измерили или она не прошла порог издателя. Каждый рейтинг перечисляет их.

Карта и глобус

Карта — Equal Earth, сохраняющая настоящую площадь каждой страны: Меркатор делает Гренландию больше Африки, которая в четырнадцать раз крупнее. Глобус показывает, где цвет лежит на сфере; карта — какую часть мира он покрывает. Оба рисуют одни контуры, и любой из них можно заменить другой моделью, не трогая данные.

Цвет — место в рейтинге: верхняя десятая часть самая яркая, дальше до четверти, половины, трёх четвертей, девяти десятых и нижняя десятая; легенда печатает значения каждой полосы. Нет данных — нейтральный серый, никогда не низкий балл. Контуры покрывают 173 из 237 стран и территорий; остальные 64 меньше пикселя и перечислены, а не слиты с соседом и не нарисованы нулём.

Факты в каждой строке

Население в этот момент, интерполированное между оценками ООН на 1 июля, его изменение за год, рождения и смерти — и за меткой сегодня три постоянных значения: мужчины и женщины, ВВП и столица. Всё взято без изменений из набора данных сайта Плейбек на зафиксированном коммите.
